Eclipse is a word meaning "hide." When the moon passes in front of the sun, the sun is hidden from us, and we call that an eclipse of the sun. When the moon becomes hidden in the earths shadow, we call that an eclipse of the moon.
An eclipse of the sun happens in daytime when the moon is "new" and on the same side of the earth is the sun. Even though the moon is much smaller than the sun, the moon is closer to earth, so it can completely block off the sun. This is called a total eclipse. People in certain areas on earth see a black disc in the sky. It has a beautiful halo of light around it. When the moon is not directly between the sun and the earth, it darkens only part of the sun, causing a partial eclipse. An eclipse of the moon happens at night when the moon is full. The earth has a shadow, just like everything else the sun shines on. This shadow stretches out into space on the side of the earth away from the sun. If the moon moves completely into this shadow, the eclipse is total. Then people on earth see something very strange. The whole moon turns deep red. A partial eclipse will happen if the moon moves only partly into the earths shadow. Long ago people were afraid of eclipses. They didnt like the strange darkness caused by them. They thought it was caused by a dragon trying to eat up the sun. These people shot arrows into the air and beat drums. In this way they hoped to scare away this beast. Other people would urge dogs to howl in order to frighten away bad spirits. Eclipses, however, have really been quite helpful. Much has been learned from them. During one in 1868 scientists discovered helium, the gas that makes balloons rise. Another eclipse allowed scientists to record the very hot temperatures of the outer parts of the sun. Also, the belief that the suns pull caused light from other passing stars to turn rather than go in a straight line was proved during an eclipse. The world continues to learn exciting facts from eclipses.

2. How can you find out what is going on inside a person’s body without opening the patient up? Regular X-ray can show a lot. CAT scans can show even more. They can give a three-dimensional view of body organ. What is CAT scans? CAT stands for Computerized Axial Topography(层面X线照相术). It is a special X-ray machine that obtains a 360 degree picture of a small area to a patient’s body. Doctors use X-rays to study and diagnose diseases and injuries within the body. X-rays can locate foreign objects inside the body or take pictures of some internal organ―if special substances as dyes or special liquids are added to the organs to be X-rayed. A CAT scanner, however, uses a beam of X-rays to give a cross-sectional(横断面的) view of a specific part of the body. A fine beam of X-rays is scanned across the body and rotated around the patient from many different angles. A computer analyzes the information from each angle and produces a clear cross-sectional image on a screen. This image is then photographed for later use. Several cross-sections, taken one after another, can give clear “photo” of the entire body organs. The newest CAT scanners can even give clear images of active, moving organs, just as a fast action camera can “stop the action”, giving clear images of what appears only mistily to the eye. And because of the 360-degree pictures, CAT scans show 3 dimensional views of organs in a manner that was only revealed during surgery or autopsy (examining a dead patient). Too much exposure to X-rays can cause skin burns, cancer or other damage to the body. Yet CAT scans actually don’t expose the patient to more radiation than conventional X-rays do. CAT scans can also be done without injecting dyes into the patient so they are less risky than regular X-ray procedures. CAT scans provide accurate, detailed information. They can detect such a thing as bleeding inside the brain. They are helping to save lives.
1). What is NOT true of a CAT scan?
A. It utilizes computer techniques.
B. It gives clear images of active, moving body parts.
C. It can stop the action of an organ for a fraction of a second.
D. It is safer than regular X-ray procedures.

Every year television stations receive hundreds of complaints about the loudness of advertisements. However, federal rules forbid the practice of making ads louder than the programming. In addition, television stations always operate at the highest sound level allowed for reasons of efficiency. According to one NBC executive, no difference exists in the peak sound level of ads and programming. Given this information, why do commercials sound so loud?
The sensation of sound involves a variety of factors in addition to its speak level. Advertisers are skillful at creating the impression of loudness through their expert use of such factors. One major contributor to the perceived loudness of commercials is that much less variation in sound level occurs during a commercial. In regular programming the intensity of sound varies over a large range. However, sound levels in commercials tend to stay at or near peak levels.
Other “tricks of the trade” are also used. Because low-frequency sounds can mask higher frequency sounds, advertisers filter out any noises that may drown out the primary message. In addition, the human voice has more auditory impact in the middle frequency ranges. Advertisers electronically vary voice sounds so that they stay within such a frequency band. Another approach is to write the script so that lots of consonants are used, because people are more aware of consonants than vowel sounds. Finally, advertisers try to begin commercials with sounds that are highly different from those of the programming within which the commercial is buried. Because people become adapted to the type of sounds coming from programming, a dramatic change in sound quality draws viewer attention. For example, notice how many commercials begin with a cheerful song of some type.
The attention-getting property of commercial can be seen by observing one-to two-year-old children who happen to be playing around a television set. They may totally ignore the programming. However, when a commercial comes on, their attention is immediately drawn to it because of its dramatic sound quality.
1). According to the passage, the maximum intensity of sound coming from commercials .
A.
does not exceed that of programs

is less than that of programs

When companies do business overseas, they come in contact with people from different cultures. These individuals often speak a different language and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems.
For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to cool their heels as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness. Unless one is aware of such expected behaviors he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.
A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubles worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75 on Monday and 0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.
A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict import. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

5. The “balance of nature” is not an empty phrase. Nature provides a population to occupy a suitable environment and cuts down surplus population to fit the available food supply. One means of reducing surplus population is predators(食肉动物); others are parasites(寄生虫) and diseases. Also, population density produces nervous disorders and even drivers animals to mass migrations, like the lemmings(旅鼠) of Norway who plunge(跳入) into the sea. That predators populations increase to control other animals has long been known. Many years ago, the Hudsons Bay Company records revealed that the fox population went up and down about a year after the rabbit population had gone up and down. Sometimes a situation occurs in which the predator population is reduced to a level below that which nature can readily replace. On Valcour Island in Lake Champlain (New York), a costly campaign resulted in the elimination of predatory animals only to have birds and small animals (including grouse(松鸡) and hares, popular game) increase for four years afterward. Then, lacking predator control, nature resorted to disease to cut down these populations. Jamaica had an example of natures persistence in providing animals for existing habits. Sugar planters, about 75 years ago, imported mongooses(猫鼬) to control rats. The mongooses killed off the rats and, with plentiful food, multiplied. Rats became scarce and the mongooses ate lambs, kids, puppies(小狗),and wildlife. Eventually, food became scarce and the mongooses’ population declined.

6.
The biographer has to dance between two shaky positions with respect to the subject. Too close a relation, and the writer may lose objectivity. Not close enough, and the writer may lack the sympathy necessary to any effort to portray a mind, a soul―the quality of life. Who should write the biography of a family, for example? Because of their closeness to the subject, family members may have special information, but by the same token, they may not have the distance that would allow them to be fair. Similarly, a king’s servant might not be the best one to write a biography of that king. But a foreigner might not have the knowledge and sympathy necessary to write the king’s biography―not for a readership from within the kingdom, at any rate.
There is no ideal position for such a task. The biographer has to work with a position he or she has in the world, adjusting that position as necessary to deal with the subject. Every position has strengths and weaknesses: to thrive, a writer must try to become aware of these, evaluate them in terms of the subject, and select a position accordingly.
When their subjects are heroes or famous figures, biographies often reveal a democratic motive: they attempt to show that their subjects are only human, no better than anyone else. Other biographies are meant to change us, to invite us to become better than we are. The biographies of Jesus found in the Bible are in this class. Biographers may claim that their account is the “authentic” one. In advancing this claim, they are helped if the biography is “authorized” by the subject; this presumably allows the biographer special access to private information. “Unauthorized” biographies also have their appeal, however, since they can suggest an independence of mind in the biographer. In book promotions, the “unauthorized” characterisation usually suggests the prospect of juicy gossip that the subject had hoped to suppress. A subject might have several biographies, even several “authentic” ones. We sense intuitively that no one is in a position to tell “the” story of a life, perhaps not even the subject, and this has been proved by the history of biography.
1). According to the author, an ideal biographer would be one who _____.
A.
knows the subject very well and yet maintains a proper distance from him
B.
is close to the subject and knows the techniques of biography writing

is independent and knows the techniques of biography writing
