1.
Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil, and lubricating oils, come from one source -- crude oil found below the earths surface, as well as under large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25,000 feet into the earths interior.
Sometimes crude oil is secured by drilling a hole through the earth, but more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure at the source or pumping forces crude oil to the surface. Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum products are always measured in 42-gallon barrels. Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent or opaque, but regardless, their chemical composition is made up of two elements: carbon and hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons.
Other chemical elements found in union with the hydrocarbons are few and are classified as impurities. Trace elements are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded. The combination of carbon and hydrogen forms many thousands of compounds which are possible because of the carious positions and joinings of these two atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule.
The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing the vapors. These products are the so-called light oils, such as gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil. The residue remaining after the light oils are distilled is known as heavy or residual fuel oil and is used mostly for burning under boilers. Additional complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure of the hydrocarbons to produce other products, some of which are used to upgrade and increase the octane rating of various types of gasoline.
1). Which of the following is NOT true?
A.
Crude oil is found below land and water.

2. Unemployment may be one of the biggest problems our people as well as our government are faced with today. According to an official report, in Shanghai alone, since 1986, nearly 1,000,000 adult workers have lost their hobs because of factory closings and cutbacks either temporarily laid off or permanently forced to retire. Many people, especially the policy makers, believe that forcing adult worker, those who are over 45, to retire is an effective means to relieve the tension of unemployment, for it can provide more job opportunities for the jobless young. But they fail to notice that forcing a person who is still able to work and has a family to support to retire brings serious financial problems as well as emotional and physical ones. They also fail to realize that actually, workers aged 45-60 tend to be more stable, more skillful and more experienced than workers of any other age, that to some extent this age is the prime time for one’s productivity and creativity. To force them to retire is a huge waste of the nation’s best resources. On the contrary, if we turn out attention to the other end of the age spectrum(范围), a more effective way might emerge. Today, only 3% of school-leavers are allowed to go to college, leaving the majority of the young people under 18 and without adequate preparation to join the labor force. If, however, more of them are able to attend college and begin full-time employment at a later age, more job opportunities will be created as the number of years that an average person works full time shrinks. Most importantly, we should not be content merely to solve the problem of unemployment, but rather, we should improve the quality of the work force at the same time―by retaining the skilled adults and recruiting the well-educated young.

The “balance of nature” is not an empty phrase. Nature provides a population to occupy a suitable environment and cuts down surplus population to fit the available food supply. One means of reducing surplus population is predators(食肉动物); others are parasites(寄生虫) and diseases. Also, population density produces nervous disorders and even drivers animals to mass migrations, like the lemmings(旅鼠) of Norway who plunge(跳入) into the sea. That predators populations increase to control other animals has long been known. Many years ago, the Hudsons Bay Company records revealed that the fox population went up and down about a year after the rabbit population had gone up and down. Sometimes a situation occurs in which the predator population is reduced to a level below that which nature can readily replace. On Valcour Island in Lake Champlain (New York), a costly campaign resulted in the elimination of predatory animals only to have birds and small animals (including grouse(松鸡) and hares, popular game) increase for four years afterward. Then, lacking predator control, nature resorted to disease to cut down these populations. Jamaica had an example of natures persistence in providing animals for existing habits. Sugar planters, about 75 years ago, imported mongooses(猫鼬) to control rats. The mongooses killed off the rats and, with plentiful food, multiplied. Rats became scarce and the mongooses ate lambs, kids, puppies(小狗),and wildlife. Eventually, food became scarce and the mongooses’ population declined.
1). The phrase “balance of nature” (Line 1, Para. 1) means ____________.

Among all the animals, the ape is most like human beings. Both people and apes have the same brain structure, the same nervous system, and the same kind of blood. There are four kinds of apes: the chimpanzee, the orangutan, the gorilla, and the gibbon. They live in the deep forests and warm tropical regions of Africa and of southeast Asia, including Indonesia. All apes are covered with brown, reddish-brown, or black hair everywhere on their bodies except their faces, feet, and hands. Their hands each have four fingers and a thumb that helps them grip things the way our thumbs help us. But they also have a thumb on each foot instead of a big toe. Thus they can hold things with their feet also. Having short, weak legs, apes do not walk on the ground very much. However, their arms are very strong. This enables them to swing from branches and travel very quickly from tree to tree. These animals live in small family groups that move from place to place in search of vegetables and fruit. They also eat eggs, small animals, nuts, and insects. When they are tired they build nests in the trees. But they rarely sleep there for more than a night or two. Then they move on to look for more food. There are some differences among the three kinds of apes. The gibbon is never more than three feet high and weighs only about fourteen pounds. The gorilla grows to be six feet tall and weighs up to 600 pounds. The orangutan is smaller than the gorilla. It stands three to five feet tall and weighs up to 200 pounds. Chimpanzees are the smartest of all apes. They can be taught to sit at a table and eat, to dress themselves, and to do other things that human children can do.
1). What does the first paragraph imply?

When companies do business overseas, they come in contact with people from different cultures. These individuals often speak a different language and have their own particular custom and manners. These differences can create problems.
For example, in France, business meetings begin promptly at the designated time and everyone is expected to be there. Foreign business people who are tardy are often left outside to cool their heels as a means of letting them know the importance of promptness. Unless one is aware of such expected behaviors he may end up insulting the people with whom he hopes to establish trade relations.
A second traditional problem is that of monetary conversions. For example, if a transaction is conducted with Russia, payment may be made in rubles. Of course, this currency is of little value to the American firm. It is, therefore, necessary to convert the foreign currency to American dollars. How much are these Russian rubles worth in terms of dollars? This conversion rate is determined by every market, where the currencies of countries are bought and sold. Thus there is an established rate, although it will often fluctuate from day to day. For example, the ruble may be worth 0.75 on Monday and 0.72 on Tuesday because of an announced wheat shortage in Russia. In addition, there is the dilemma associated with converting at 0.72. Some financial institutions may be unwilling to pay this price, feeling that the ruble will sink much lower over the next week. As a result, conversion may finally come at 0.69. These "losses" must be accepted by the company as one of the costs of doing business overseas.
A third unique problem is trade barriers. For one reason or another, all countries impose trade barriers on certain goods crossing their borders. Some trade barriers are directly related to exports. For example, the United States permits strategic military material to be shipped abroad only after government permission has been obtained. Most trade barriers, however, are designed to restrict import. Two of the most common import barriers are quotas and tariffs.

B. Crude oil is always found a few hundred feet below the surface.
C.
Pumping and pressure force crude oil to the surface.
D.
A variety of petroleum products is obtained from crude oil.
