二、阅读理解(共 3 道试题,共 60 分。)
1. “I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back. “Lucien Lawrence''s letter to Father Christmas written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn''t see the stars in the sky. When those who we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.
But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I''m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn''t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.
It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors(挑衅者),and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.
I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword(剑),and my darling from the power of the dog” Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I’m sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.?

2. Viruses cause disease by going into the body and taking over cells. But they have different taste. Each virus likes to take over only one type of cells. The rabies(狂犬病) virus, for example, only takes over brain cells. The virus that causes warts takes over skin cells.
Cold virus about 200 types in all, only takes over cells in your nose and throat(咽喉). Once a cold virus has taken over a cell, that cell is sure to die. But as it’s dying, it does something to save the cells around it, telling all the neighboring cells that a virus is coming and that they had better get ready for the attack. It also gives white blood cells time to come to the rescue. White blood cells live in your blood. When a cold comes, they leave the blood and go to your throat and nose where they kill and eat the viruses. The battle is hard and it can go on for several days. Luckily, the white blood cells always win.
After the battle, the white blood cells leave behind a special group of guards, called antibodies. The antibodies go through the bloodstream and make sure that the defeated cold virus never attacks again. And you can never get the same cold twice.
For the white blood cells to come in charge of the rescue, your body has to send extra blood to the cold’s battle site --- your nose and throat. The extra blood makes the inside of your nose and throat swell (肿) and turn red. That’s why you get a sore(疼痛的) throat. That’s also why you get a runny nose. When you are feeling well, the mucus(黏液) that lines and protects the inside of your nose usually moves backwards toward your throat. Then it slides into your stomach, where it is destroyed. But when you have a cold, your nose gets too swollen for the mucus to move backwards. So it comes out the front of your nose.

3. My mother knew how to knit (编织), but she never taught me. She thought that knitting was no longer a skill worth passing down. My grandmother still knitted, though, and every Christmas she made a pair of socks for my brother and me , of red wool (羊毛) . They were the ones we wore under our ice skates, when it was really important to have warm feet.
Knitting is a nervous habit that happens to be productive. It helped me give up smoking by giving my hands something else to do. It is wonderful when you feel sad because no matter what else happens, you are making something beautiful.
I love breathing life into the patterns. It’s true magic finding a good design, buying beautiful wool in the exact blue to match my daughter’s eyes, taking it on the train with me every day for two months, working happily to get it done by Christmas, and staying up late after stockings are filled to sew in the sleeves and weave in the end.
Knitting has taught me patience (耐性). I know that if I just keep going, even if it takes months, there will be a reward (报酬). When I make a mistake, I know that becoming angry will not fix it, that I just have to go back and take out the knitting bag and start over again.
People ask if I would do it for money, and the answer is no. First, you could not pay me enough for the hours I put into a sweater. But more importantly, this is an activity I keep separating from such considerations. I knit to cover my children and other people I love in warmth and color. I knit to give them something earthly that money could never buy.
By day I can write about Northern Ireland or the New York City Police Department and get paid for it , but on the train home , surrounded by people with laptops (便携式电脑), I take out my old knitting bag and join the centuries of women who have knitted for love.
