二、阅读理解(共 3 道试题,共 60 分。)
1. In the late 1960’s, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steelanglass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a forest of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lots.?
Skyscrapers are also consumers and wasters of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120,000 kilowatts―enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.
Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss(orgain)through a wall of half inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical brick wall filled with insulation(绝缘)board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glaze panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare(眩目的光)as well as heat gain. However, mirror walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.?
Skyscrapers put a strain on a city’s sanitation facilities (卫生设备), too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone produce 2.25 million gallons of wastes each year―as much a city the size of Stanford, Connecticut, which has a population of more than 109,000.
Skyscrapers also affect television reception, block bird flyways and air traffic. In Boston in the late 1960’s,some people even feared that shadows from skyscrapers would kill the grass on Boston Common.
Still, people continue to build skyscrapers for all the reasons that they have always built them―personal pride and the desire of owners to have the largest possible amount of space to rent.
1). The main purpose of the passage is to――
A. compare skyscrapers with other modern structures
B. describe some architectural designs of skyscrapers
C. describe skyscrapers and their effect on the environment
D. encourage using bricks in the construction of skyscrapers

2). According to the passage, what is one disadvantage of skyscrapers that have mirrored walls?
A. The surrounding air is heated.
B. Construction time is increased.
C. The windows must be cleaned daily.
D. Extra air conditioning equipment is needed.

3). According to the passage, in the late 1960’s some residents of Boston were concerned with which aspect of skyscrapers?
A. The noise from their construction.
B. The high cost of renting an office.
C. The harmful effects on the city’s grass.
D. The removal of trees from building sites.

4). The author raises problems that would most concern which of the following groups?
A. Pilots
B. Electricians
C. Environmentalists
D. Construction workers

5). The underlined word“ecologists” in paragraph one means――――
A. experts on construction
B. experts on electric facilities
C. experts on the building materials
D. experts on protecting the environment
此题选: D
2. Not everyone in the world requires the same amount(量) of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural(文化的) difference, not an economic(经济的) one. Knowing your own psychological(心理的) space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them. In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very unusual in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in bed near them.
The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.
Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressure(压力). It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.
1). The first sentence in Paragraph 1 “Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of space” means “______”.
A. Not two people need exactly the same amount of living space
B. Living space requirements are not always the same
C. The world requires the same amount of living space
D. Nobody needs a required amount of living space

2). Some families gather closer to each other at home than others because ______.
A. they have limited living space
B. they are brought up in a large family
C. it satisfies(满足) their psychological space needs
D. the children in the family sleep in the same bed with their parents

3). Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Americans are trained to live in the large rooms at birth.
B. Economic situation decides one''s amount of space needs.
C. People in different countries demand(need) different psychological space.
D. Knowing your psychological space needs is important, as it has effect on your future.

4). The best title for this passage is ______.

C. Space Needs in Different Countries
D. Psychological Space and Economic Pressure

5). According to the author, it is ____ to change completely change people’s psychological space needs.

3. Scientists Identify SARS Virus
Scientists say they have identified the virus that causes the mysterious, flu like illness Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
Scientists say the corona virus(冠状病毒),now identified as the cause of SARS, is part of the same family of viruses that causes the common cold. However they say it is part of a distinct subgroup of corona viruses that do not have the same properties as the ordinary cold.
World Health Organization virologist Klaus Stohr said that with the identification of this corona virus, it could now be possible to develop more specific diagnostic tests for the disease.
“Now the research can be focused on this virus. The research will help us to develop new drugs,” he said. “Now we can focus on one pathogen which has been sequenced, which provides additional information for the development of tests. Now, one can perhaps think about a vaccine(疫苗) if need be. We are still, I think, optimistic that we can control the disease with the measures which have been carried out.”
SARS is spread by droplets through close personal contact. Symptoms include high fever, a dry cough and shortness of breath. About four percent of its victims die. The scientists say this virus has long existed in nature, but it has never been seen in humans before.
They say a new genetic sequencing of the SARS virus proves conclusively that it came from animals. A scientist at the U.S. Center for Disease Control, James Le Duc, says this is the first experience scientists have with this virus. Therefore, he says, a lot remains unknown.
“As you know, it is what we call a virgin soil outbreak,” Mr. Le Duc said. “It has never occurred in humans before. How it will progress, nobody really knows. But, it is most difficult to control diseases that are spread by droplets in this person to person spread. So, I think it would be premature(太早的) to suggest we are near the end of this outbreak.”

1). The passage mainly tells us_______ .
A. people have controlled the virus
B. SARS virus has been identified
C. SARS virus is too difficult for man to control
D. everything about SARS everything about SARS

B. It and the virus causing the ordinary cold belong to the same family.
C. It is part of a distinct sub-group of corona viruses.
D. It has different properties from the ordinary cold.

3). From what Klaus Stohr said, it is known that____ .
